Elsbeth Kempner nee Janklowitz was born on 5 August 1897 in Berlin, Germany to Stanislaus Janklowitz and Estera Janklowitz nee Lakser. She married Josef Kempner, a furrier, on 26 October 1924. In August of 1925 they had a daughter whom they named Ruth. Initially, they lived on Wielandstraße in Charlottenburg. They then lived on AlteJakobstraße. They moved into their final home in Berlin on Grünstraße in approximately 1933/34. On 16 October 1936 Elsbeth’s husband Josef died. Then on 31 March 1939, having already sent her daughter Ruth away through the Kindertransport, she fled Germany, also to the UK. Elsbeth immigrated to the United States on 16 June 1947 where she lived the rest of her life. She died on 13 May 1976 in Margate City, New Jersey where she had been living with her daughter Ruth and her husband. She was a very good person but also quite serious most of the time since she remained sad having lost so much of her family in the Holocaust.
