Survived
Born at Berlin, Germany, 27 February 1905; died at Burlington, Vermont, USA, 23 December 1993; married at Nutley, New Jersey, USA, 11 April 1942, Ruth Louise Armstrong (born at Chicago, Illinois, USA, 23 July 1914; died at Hammar, Sweden, 30 June 2001; daughter of Roy Stewart and Cora (Dexter) Armstrong). Ulrich attended schools in Berlin and earned the degree of Diplom Ingueneur (equivalent to a master’s degree) from the Berlin Technische Hochschule (now Berlin Technical University) in 1929. His career stalled in the worldwide economic depression in the late 1920s and early 1930s and then with the advent of the National Socialist regime. In 1936, he left Germany and travelled to the United States on a visitor’s visa. After spending time in Tennessee and Colorado, he was required to return to Europe, but did not re-enter Germany. He lived for about two years in northern Italy, and in the first weeks of January 1939, returned to the United States with immigrant status.
He located in Chicago, where he remained until 1946, when he and Ruth moved to southern New Jersey. He worked for many years as an industrial engineer for Campbell Soup Company in Camden, New Jersey. The family lived during most of that time in nearby Moorestown, New Jersey. In 1970, he and Ruth moved in retirement to South Burlington, Vermont, which was their base for the rest of their lives. For many years Ulrich was active on the substitute teaching staff of South Burlington High School. They spent two one-year sojourns in Braunschweig, Germany, where Ulrich had a part-time job for a philatelic dealer (following a lifelong interest), and they traveled extensively in Europe.
He and Ruth had one daughter and one son.
